Traditional accounting firms offer audit, tax, and consulting services to clients. We came to realize that if we were going to continue to offer audit services to our clients, we would be forced to remain emotionally and intellectually independent from them. However, if we were truly interested in helping businesses grow, we had to become a partner, fully invested emotionally and intellectually in helping them succeed. We could not be an avid advocate for a client, while at the same time remain independent enough to express an opinion on their financial statements as a true outsider. We knew that we enjoyed helping people much more than auditing them. We also realized that while auditors are important in keeping the financial markets going, no business owner liked being forced by their banker to pay to have someone audit them. We also realized there were far more small business owners who needed someone to help them, than wanted someone to audit them. It was clear, auditing had to go.

When we made that decision, everything became clearer. Instead of studying the latest pronouncements from the FASB or AICPA, we could explore questions like—“How can I increase profits?” “How do I manage unmanageable people?” “How do I attract more profitable customers?” And possibly the most important question of all—“How do we change the way we work with clients so we can achieve these lofty goals at a price the client can afford?”

Most accountants charge by the hour. An hour working on a sales tax return gets billed at the same rate as an hour of strategic planning, even though the value of the results of the two projects is vastly different. Not only is the value of the compliance work different than the work as a confidant, but the value of the output of each project has different values for different clients.

While a CPA can measure the effort put into a project, only the client can determine the ultimate value of the project.
