Second, there are the day-to-day activities you need to complete in order to generate income while protecting the assets you have accumulated.
In his book The E-Myth, Michael Gerber pointed out that most businesses fail because they are run by Technicians, people who know how to do the work the customer needs. He goes on to conclude that successful businesses are run by Entrepreneurs, people who know how to build a business that does the work the customer needs.
Technicians tend to build their business around themselves, from the center out, then wake up one morning to find themselves trapped by the walls of the company they built. They work around the clock to do the billing and the payroll, worry about security, and vendors, and employees and doing the things they have to do to run a business but were never trained to do. They’ve taken a job they love and turned it into a job they hate.
On the other hand, a true Entrepreneur starts from day one to build a business that is separate from himself or herself. They stay outside the business so that one day the business will operate without them. When they can run their business from their boat in Florida, they know they can finally say their business is a success.
At Ernst
and Rabe our goal is to help small business owners make that important transition
from Technician to true Entrepreneur. We help our clients build businesses
that have value.
